WHO I AM.

After spending many years exploring and repurposing outdated technology in my art practice, I tried Virtual Reality. I knew that though still early days, the creative possibilities of this medium had immense potential.

I’m now creating interactive experiences, and I’m starry-eyed about the prospects of the immersive computing age.

Visit my LinkedIn profile or email me at jackquick(dot)london@gmail(dot)com - I’m available for junior VR developer roles in London, Brighton and the south east.

	HAMMERTIME VR

How much damage can you cause in ten seconds?

A tech demo and proof of concept.
In HammerTime, players compete to cause the most possible chaos and damage to a small office storeroom, in a limited amount of time.

This was my final project on the Udacity VR Developer Nanodegree. The hammers were photogrammetrically captured and created using Agisoft PhotoScan software.

The idea for the larger project involves user playing the role of Satan, ‘possessing’ various characters to cause therapeutic destruction.

Made in Unity for HTC Vive.

INFINITY VR

Under the supervision of Start VR’s Lead Unity developer I adapted an existing real estate application from an earlier project and delivered the finished app for internal distribution via the Oculus store.
Replacing all 360 content and editing data structures.Adapting navigation system to new app content flow. All UI positioned at correct stereo depth, I also created scripts for manual stereo convergence.Implementing changes, working on producer feedback.Refined UI in Photoshop, executed designs and animations to match concepts.Completed general polish pass before submission to client.

Two player arcade game proof of concept.

Working with a sound designer and game designer, I created a proof of concept for an arcade game to utilise the Visospace Alto: a hoverboard type VR locomotion peripheral.

The experience features several visual techniques to reduce discomfort, including a cockpit surround and particle streams to show direction of movement.
Players capture yellow active segments of the board, whilst a wave sweeps and changes the arena layout.

Networked with UNET including a default lobby for team selection, networked score and music scripts.
Adaptive music system, using networked game score to select interchangable music stems from WWISEExtensive user testing and project iteration as prototype locomotion hardware and OpenVR plugins were developed

Photogrammetry scan model preview

A project to demonstrate trigger based AR.A Structure Scanner was used to capture my full body scan (with help) and the resulting static model was rigged online using Adobe Mixamo. My business card was used as the target texture and the model would appear and animate when this was detected by the device camera.

With so much movement, the Virtual Unity camera can be set to render a previous frame as the background for each new frame giving mesmerising results.

EVENT CINEMAS VR

One of my earlier commercial projects, I sat in on client meetings and advised on minor changes that were requested, I then implemented these changes and presented the project prototype for internal and external review.
Replacing and reformatting 360 video content using FFMpeg.Inserting and replacing new and existing voice over clips.Ensuring all transitions occured correctly.Making a particle track spline and editing particle effects.Writing wrapper scripts to refactor existing server and client c# scripts

MUSEUM OF VR SOCIAL MEDIA

An interactive google cardboard mobile experience documenting the 2017 VR Social Media scene.

The museum contains a campsite (a common social vr trope) area to introduce the teleport mechanic, the user then enters the museum to discover five exhibits.

This project was my first mobile app, and was a good chance to implement visual and audio feedback techniques I had learned through my VR design course and through experience testing GearVR apps.

PHOSPHOR STUDIES

Several explorations into the screen: getting into the details of the image mosaic.Since 2008 my photographic practice has revolved around investigating obsolete video technologies. I am drawn to the strangeness of the screen as an object, and as a carrier of information.

Some of these Phosphor Studies photographs have been exhibited in galleries, others used as artwork for electronic musicians - others are purely the result of my own curiosity.

IN PLANES

Entire displays acting as single pixels. Moving images within still images, still images recording an instant and the duration of each experiment

QUALITIES IN RESOLUTION

Abstract and detailed unaltered scans of 35mm negatives. Through the grain and dust the outlines of pixels take form.
